A Chardonnay baker's dozen here, probably the first one we've ever put together! Quality kit too, with a $75 RRP Adelaide Hills Chardy from Solaris, a gold medal winner from Curtis, creamy goodness from Smalltown and a lovely Coonawarra Chardy from Katnook. So far, $462 worth for $265.
The kicker? a 13th bottle from Jean Loron... taking the total value to $582. This is an excellent white Burgundy offering layers of flavour and complexity. JL have been cranking out wine since 1711 and this premium bottling offers stone fruits, creaminess, minerality and that special creamy-meets-cheesy continuum you get when high quality fruit spends time on yeast solids in barrel. Yum!
A stunning White Burgundy, aka Chardonnay, from a legendary producer who has been fermenting grapes since 1711. Bill Nanson, of the Burgundy Report, first tasted this wine 3 years ago, offering ‘More complexity and vibrance to this aroma – more barrel too ... a wine that’s more about the future. Wide, saline, concentrated, and certainly mineral. The finish is subtle but very persistent. You should give this wine at least 3 years in the cellar – or I would anyway. Excellent wine, with the potential for great.’ So, we’ve waited 3 years and the wine is ravishingly beautiful – voluptuous yet structured, pendulously stonefruity yet mineral, with a lovely cheese edge that comes from barrel worked and lees stirred Chardonnay. Magic stuff.
Lovely, textural, fruit driven and relaxed. Plenty of ripe and pendulous stonefruits here along with rockmelon, vanilla, crème brûlée and brioche. High quality Chardonnay that is great drinking already.
This Chardonnay has aromas of restrained tropical notes, fresh herbs, grilled nuts and butter. The mid palate texture already hints at butteriness and this will increase over the next few years.
A lighter, almost Chablis style of Chardy. Aromatics emphasise citrus and Citrus blossoms. The palate is light to mid weight, offering peach and honeydew melon, Finish is crisp and dry.

Chardonnay sits on the fence of many a wine enthusiast. Versatile, kind in nature and oh so compliant, however for most it's still dressed in attire that's so distinctly... 90s. Shoulder pads, overalls and bike shorts saw this particular version of white wine with such a wooded vengeance, we were practically asking the chefs to take the butter out of the meals to make way for it.
