13 Bottles for 13 Bucks Apiece v10.0

This series began a couple of years ago with a simple challenge — what’s the best bang-for-buck, sub-$20-a-bottle pack we can put together? They’ve proved mighty popular, and now we’re up to Pack #10 — and we’re confident it’s the best yet. Better still, it will set you back just $13 a bottle!

Inside you’ll find four Barossa Shiraz, and three each from McLaren Vale, the Clare Valley, and Frankland River — all absolutely delicious.

The standout is Yaldara’s Grand Cuvée, a huge 97-point Barossa Shiraz, closely followed by Curtis’ 96-point Old Vine McLaren Vale Shiraz, which retails for around $100 a bottle. That said, there’s not a weak link in the lineup — even the Frankland River Shiraz scored 94–95 points from everyone on our tasting panel.

Just the fourth release of Yaldara Grand, and arguably the best so far, with its incredible concentration of fruit and use of exceptional oak. A big wine and a complex expression of the Barossa. Milk and dark chocolate, aniseed, blue fruits, tobacco leaf, plus plenty of cedary oak and tannin. Incredible.

    McLaren Vale, SA
96pts Sam Kim, 96pts Melbourne International Wine Competition, 95pts Kim Brebach, 94pts Ken Gargett, 3 Golds
A black, plush, and full-bodied Shiraz made from 80-year-old vines. Exceptional fruit intensity here, and weight of black fruits on the palate. Opulence is balanced by judicious acidity and there’re plenty of tannins driving through to an epic conclusion. Decant if you are going to enjoy now, otherwise cellar!
    Frankland River, WA
92pts Ray Jordan, 93pts Kim Brebach, 90pts Sam Kim

Frankland River is one of the most remote wine regions on earth and produces glorious Riesling and Shiraz. We tasted this exceptional 21 and bought as much as we could get our hands on. There's blue fruits and spice, The fruit is medium bodied yet powerful, the finish spiced and coated with plenty of lovely, fine, trailing tannins.

    Made From: Frankland River Shiraz

Aromas and Flavours: Blue fruits, spice, fruit intensity, fine tannins

Drink if you like: mid weight and bright rather than ponderous reds

Useful: Anytime - good drinking anytime, anywhere

    Barossa Valley, SA
92pts Ken Gargett, 92pts Sam Kim, 92pts Kim Brebach
A rich, expansive morass of relaxed blackness, herbed with mint and splintered with cedar. Dive into a T-Bone, pull the ring on one of these, settle back and enjoy.
    Clare Valley, SA
    91pts Sam Kim
A polished Shiraz from a single high-altitude vineyard, picked at optimal ripeness and matured for a couple of years in mostly seasoned oak. The oak plays a subtle role—contributing texture rather than dominating with cedar, though there’s a hint of that too. Deeply flavoured with black and blue fruits, spice, and impressive concentration. Harmonious and seriously delicious.
