An assembly of our favourite Grenache and blends at the mo. Multiple trophy winning Kilikanoon Baudinet GSM, trophy winning Kilikanoon Prodigal, Curtis' 96 point old viner and Lone Palm's old vine 95 pointer all offer power to burn but with a brightness of fruit that is very much the modern way. When Pinot is good, it's absolutely magical... and generally terrifyingly expensive. Common refrains of inveterate Pinot drinkers include 'that's bloody good for $30', and the slightly unconvincing 'nice Pinot', uttered with equal parts relief and lament, 'cos it's decent and tastes like Pinot, but doesn't offer that ethereal, magical, sense-enveloping and expanding magic that Pinot can deliver, albeit frustratingly infrequently. Leading the way, the Picardy, an 11 clone masterpiece with most of the clones sourced direct from Grand Cru growers in Burgundy and most of those retained by the Pannell's for use in Picardy Pinot only. Little wonder this is one of the most fancied Pinot in the country at the moment. Next up Heirloom's Velvet Fog, a powerful, almost muscular wine which is elevated by its nuanced red fruit perfume. Riposte's Dagger is light to medium bodied with delicate aromatics and the Solaris is another Adelaide Hills Pinot with plenty of flavour and an excellent texture.

Tough judging this year, with only around 5% of wines picking up a gold, and we can confirm that the quality of this year’s dozen is absolute fire across the board.

Every wine in the pack this year is a gold winner. There are also a couple of trophy winners: the After Five Monte, and Forester’s Shiraz. The latter is 86% Shiraz and 14% Fer… yep, an ancient varietal of Basque origin, which these days is also planted in some southern French wine regions. There is also a bit of it planted over in WA. The variety offers cassis, red fruits, black fruits, superb intensity and a degree of smokiness. This might be the first time a trophy winner at the Adelaide Wine Show has contained Fer, which offers a nice opportunity for nerdy contemplation. More importantly, the wine is beautiful. Looking beyond the accolades garnered at the Adelaide Show, these wines have also accrued an additional 10 gold medals, a trophy, a runner up in Halliday’s annual Cabernet competition and more. These wines are uniformly exceptional.
