When Pinot is good, it's absolutely magical... and generally terrifyingly expensive. Common refrains of inveterate Pinot drinkers include 'that's bloody good for $30', and the slightly unconvincing 'nice Pinot', uttered with equal parts relief and lament, 'cos it's decent and tastes like Pinot, but doesn't offer that ethereal, magical, sense-enveloping and expanding magic that Pinot can deliver, albeit frustratingly infrequently. We're here to fix that today, with this Pinot six-pack, which includes: 2x $28 Pinots that are better than most $40 Pinots. This is the Knappstein; light to medium bodied, fragrant, with great acidity. A lovely, moreish drop. 2x $40 Pinots which are excellent, perfumed, powerful and yet light on their feet. This is the Heirloom Velvet Fog; wafting an ethereal and refined Pinot fug, medium bodied, powerful, long and lovely. 2x $70 a bottle, best in class, Burgundian cloned STUNNERS. This is the Picardy, which is in the top handful of Pinots made in Aus. Medium bodied, superlative fruit and glassine, Burgundy-like tannins to finish. Dowie Doole's Sparkling Shiraz, made entirely from an A-grade Shiraz solera which has been in continuous use since 1996. Stunning fruit and just slightly sweet, this is exceptional.

Jeanneret's Sevenhill Riesling- 96 points from Sam Kim. This offers an ethereal fragrance and a powerful core of intense Riesling fruit. Lively and beguiling simultaneously.

Irvine Grand Merlot 2018. Australia's greatest Merlot; rich and smooth, laden with ripe tobacco leaf, plums and more. Just a beautiful thing to put in your head.

We get it, not everyone wants to drink Sauv Blanc and even if you do, sometimes it’s nice to get into a pear-laden PG or a crisp and aromatic Rizza or perhaps something even more exotic! So here’s a pack with the Sauv Blancs banished! In their place, 2 stunning Rieslings from Claymore leads the way, laden with citrus and mouthwatering acidity, plus apples and pears and a wonderfully creamy texture in the PG from Artis. Ted’s Place PG is dry and textural, with pear, ginger and apple aromas and flavours.

Tough judging this year, with only around 5% of wines picking up a gold, and we can confirm that the quality of this year’s dozen is absolute fire across the board.

Every wine in the pack this year is a gold winner. There are also a couple of trophy winners: the After Five Monte, and Forester’s Shiraz. The latter is 86% Shiraz and 14% Fer… yep, an ancient varietal of Basque origin, which these days is also planted in some southern French wine regions. There is also a bit of it planted over in WA. The variety offers cassis, red fruits, black fruits, superb intensity and a degree of smokiness. This might be the first time a trophy winner at the Adelaide Wine Show has contained Fer, which offers a nice opportunity for nerdy contemplation. More importantly, the wine is beautiful. Looking beyond the accolades garnered at the Adelaide Show, these wines have also accrued an additional 10 gold medals, a trophy, a runner up in Halliday’s annual Cabernet competition and more. These wines are uniformly exceptional.
