The Kilikanoon Baudinet has scored 3 trophies, ditto the Evans & Tate Redbrook Shiraz (including the best wine of the Adelaide Show if you don't mind) The Lloyd Brothers Syrah is also a Trophy Winner.

You'll also be scoring a couple of Curtis' old vine, 96 point McLaren Vale Shiraz, a couple of Turkey Flat's magical GSM and a couple of Griffin's Reserve Shiraz from the excellent 2021 vintage

A no-brainer, eh!

There's the mid-weight and perfectly-cellared Mitchell's old vine Peppertree Shiraz which is drinking beautifully; Dowie Doole's Architect, an incredibly powerful, tiny production Shiraz with exceptionally detailed fruit; a couple from Showblock, both of which are rich and intense; Chaffey Bros trophy-winning Barossa Shiraz; and finally, Yaldara's $250-a-bottle Grand Shiraz from the unicorn '21 vintage.

Quaffing prices here for quality reds inc Barossa Shiraz, Adelaide Hills Shiraz, Langhorne Cab, a cracking Limestone Coast red blend, a 95 point powerhouse Durif and a very special 96 point, $250 a bottle Barossa Shiraz behemoth. All up $732 worth for just $180.

A fabulous selection of alt reds with plenty of new stuff. The trophy winning Clare Grenache from Kilikanoon and the superb 95 point Durif from Curtis have been in our stable for a while. The new stuff? Magical old vine Grenache from Songlines and a superb old vine Mataro Grenache blend, both from the Barossa, both made by Tom White of Lone Palm fame! They are both superb. Also a couple of new to us Barossa beauties from White Gate. White Gate are low-fi, or perhaps more accurately, light touch. They work primarily with organic and biodynamic producers, pick early and make minimal additions to the wine during ferment and prior to bottling. They figure that starting with A-grade fruit and picking a bit earlier than the norm allows them to bypass a lot of the corrective work that has to be otherwise undertaken to ensure wine stability and longevity. As a bonus, this allows the fruit to really shine. The proof is in the pudding and we can heartily attest that the pud is good!

A Chardonnay baker's dozen here, probably the first one we've ever put together! Quality kit too, with a $75 RRP Adelaide Hills Chardy from Solaris, a gold medal winner from Curtis, creamy goodness from Smalltown and a lovely Coonawarra Chardy from Katnook. So far, $462 worth for $265.

The kicker? a 13th bottle from Jean Loron... taking the total value to $582. This is an excellent white Burgundy offering layers of flavour and complexity. JL have been cranking out wine since 1711 and this premium bottling offers stone fruits, creaminess, minerality and that special creamy-meets-cheesy continuum you get when high quality fruit spends time on yeast solids in barrel. Yum!

An incredible Cab dozen here, with both the Dowie Doole and the Showblock Cabernet more than covering the asking price.

Kim Brebach gave the Dowie 96 points, having also given the 19 96 points- and compared it favourably to the $600+ wine of Gaja. It is selling incredibly quickly

More recently he gave the Showblock Reserve 97 points with the note' ‘It’s a complete wine in every way… real class here.' Kim doesn't give points away either..!

This is a big beast but retains varietal aromatics and flavours. Blue fruits, cassis, cigar box, cedar, black tea and more - all of the good stuff that makes for complex and compelling Cabernet. Drinks beautifully now, but you can tuck it away, too.

We had a bit of a think about which wines are floating our boat the most at the moment from a cellared perspective. You know, where the tannins have softened a bit and some complexity is emerging but there is still a solid accent on fresh, primary fruit. We settled on five wines: a 96-pointer from Mitchell (The Peppertree), a 94-pointer from Angas King, Kilikanoon's trophy-winning Grenache, JJ Hahn's 96-pointer from a vineyard planted in the 1890s and a 96-pointer from McLaren Vale. These are bulletproof and will work when you crack 'em at home, as a gift, or for when you head around to friends for a catch up. That all seemed like we were making things a bit too easy, so we've given you some homework in the form of two bottles of Yaldara's 96 point, $250-a-bottle Grand Cuvee Shiraz. You could study these now, but you'll want to bust out the cheat notes (decanter) so you can get a good sense of what's going on here. Do that, and you'll find these very engaging and informative already. Failing that, stick 'em away for a decade or so!
