Cabernet From Coonawarra, Clare & McLaren Vale

Cabernet From Coonawarra, Clare & McLaren Vale

We'd been fresh outta the good stuff from the Coonawarra for a while. Fortunately we've sorted that with an impeccable old vine Reserve and a superb single vineyard, close planted beauty from Wine by Thoms. We've paired them up with Dowie Doole's 96 point lovely and Kilikanoon's 95 pointer from the Clare.

Leconfield's 96pt Reserve Cabernets – the '21 was our fave Cab last year, this '22 Reserve is our fave this year. Magical perfume, structure and fruit.

Wine by Thoms Coonawarra Cabernet – Single vineyard, close planted - dense and intense but varietal, needs a decant to 'wake it up' Seriously classy.

Dowie Doole Architect McLaren Cabernet – 96pts, heartbreakingly pure fruit, brilliant structure - spindles of cedary oak.

Kilikanoon Meymans Cabernet – Rich, bold, tomato leaf, tobacco, blue fruits. black tea and purple prose once you've had that first sip :-)

12 seriously stunning Cabs worth $720 for just $265.

Only tiny quantities are made of this wine, which is the product of the finest of Dowie Doole's A-grade Cabernet fruit from each vintage. '21 being an incredible vintage has elevated this even further. The previous vintage picked up 96 points from Kim Brebach who said, "Decades ago, I had the privilege of tasting a group of Barolos and Barbarescos made by Giovanni Gaia. These wines had layers of deep flavour, ranging from smoked meats and old leather to licorice, gravel dust and tar. The Dowie Doole Architect reminded me of those wines because it had some of those characters, even if the expression was more restrained. Give it time, and I think you’ll be richly rewarded. If the price seems steep, keep in mind that a Barbaresco from Gaia will set you back $600." The '21 is better again than the exceptional 2019 vintage, and represents a barrel selection chosen from only A-grade parcels from the old, dry-grown Blewitt Springs vineyard. There's black fruits, licorice, richness, density and layers. A stunning wine that will live for a very long time

    92pts James Halliday

Minuscule production from a tiny close-planted block. A little tight at first, but that’s the sign of a Cabernet with decades ahead of it. Decant, or open and give it 30 minutes in the glass, and you’ll find layered black and blue fruits, spice, liquorice, dried herbs and espresso notes. Structured and savoury, with fine gravelly tannins and cedary oak. Impressive now, excellent tomorrow, and likely superb for 10–20 years.

A first release Reserve Cabernets from Leconfield. This blend sees Leconfield's finest Cab Sauv co-fermented with Merlot and Cab Franc, resulting in the perfectly harmonious integration of flavours. Deep in colour; the nose is fresh, and bright, offering dark fruit aromas, cedar, cigar box and dark chocolate. It balances richness with elegance beautifully and finishes with perfectly modulated fine tannins. Exceptional already, and has a long future ahead of it.

    Clare Valley, SA

An exceptional single vineyard Cab from one of Kilikanoon's original blocks. There's greater fruit weight and complexity here than in any previous release. Tobacco, blackcurrant, tomato leaf, thyme, sage and plenty more on the go here. Give it a good decant end enjoy.
