Novum Marlborough Pinot Noir 2021

$60.00
As Bob Campbell says, 'Novum deserves to be on every wine lovers' radar.' Novum concentrates on miniscule yields and then selects only the best fruit available. A visit to their website will often show nothing available for sale, such is the gap between supply and demand. A rich and elegant palate, on the first mouthful you are met with seductive black fruits but, will find it evolves into a more savoury style Pinot, with small hints of red fruit to add some very welcomed freshness. Spiced dark cherry, strawberry, cloves, and a gentle earthiness linger from the glass, enticing you to come back to this beautiful Pinot again and again. Try after a brief decant, the wine will open up to expose more of the cherry and earthy notes.

Novum focuses on extracting only the very best parcels from within vineyards. As soil types and aspects can vary considerably even in a seemingly homogeneous vineyard, they seek those ‘sweet spots’ that consistently produce superior fruit. The consequence of this approach is, of course, extremely limited production. However, their reward is an ability to produce high quality wines. If there were a New Zealand Chardonnay that could compete with Barry White, here it is. Rebecca Gibb MW Novum deserves to be on every wine lovers radar. Bob Campbell (Real Review) If only all white burgundy smelt this clean and compelling. Crystalline fruit. Good, medium weight of pure fruit that’s already intense but promises much more in the future. Long and complex. Jancis Robinson MW

Generally regarded as the launch point for the modern NZ wine world, Marlborough is as stunning to see as it is hospitable for growing Sauvignon Blanc. Cool, sea-lashed nights and warm days create long ripening seasons, giving NZ savvy's a fresh, green and intense flavour with wonderfully balanced acid. Drink them young, and enjoy them with seafood. History While wine has been produced in this region for decades (yeah, we hate to think that the 70's were THAT long ago), the 1980's were the watermark for Marlborough. Pinot noir (French pronunciation: [pinoˈnwaʁ]) is a red wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. The name may also refer to wines created predominantly from Pinot noir grapes. The name is derived from the French words for "pine" and "black" alluding to the varietals' tightly clustered dark purple pine cone-shaped bunches of fruit. Pinot noir grapes are grown around the world, mostly in the cooler regions, but the grape is chiefly associated with the Burgundy region of France. It is widely considered to produce some of the finest wines in the world, but is a difficult variety to cultivate and transform into wine. Despite this, Pinot ... Read Full Article

New Italian Wine Imports

Our Italian Imports have landed!

We tasted hundreds of wines earlier this year at the massive German Trade wine fair, Prowein, at the Italian wine expo Vinitaly and throughout various Italian wine regions. Overseas we tasted and reviewed the wines at least twice and then we did it all again as a panel back in Australia, tasting and reviewing the best wines from those shortlisted for consideration. We settled on a very select few - just the 17 superb wines which are now in stock. Drum roll please…

Here’s a little info on each of the wineries from which we have chosen to import these beautiful wines:

Ca’ de Lion is a boutique producer which has been based in the Piedmont since 1655, making wine for many, many years. We’ve chosen to start with two of their brilliant Barberas from Asti. These are exceptional examples of Barbera and we

History

While wine has been produced in this region for decades (yeah, we hate to think that the 70's were THAT long ago), the 1980's were the watermark for Marlborough. The Sauvignon Blanc's were gaining attention for being as good, if not better, than anywhere else. This was aided by a gradual decline in making the wine with a smokey, oaked style. Clean and crisp with limed acid became the fashion, and critics showered them with praise. By the late 90's, many were writing that Marlborough was the best spot on earth to grow Sauvignon Blanc.
