Novum Marlborough Chardonnay 2022

$60.00
A well-equipped challenger to white Burgundy, as the following quote from Master of Wine Jancis Robinson attests, 'If only all white burgundy smelt this clean and compelling.' If this Chardy could sing, it'd have a voice of pure silk, and hit all the notes. Delightful wafts of red apple, sweet fruit tea and white flowers float from the glass. Pure on the palate, with hints of white orchard fruits, wood spice, almond and lemon zest. A small amount of New Oak (10%) gives some fine toasty tannins. A graceful and very long finish. Pour yourself a glass one Sunday afternoon and let the wine sing!

Novum focuses on extracting only the very best parcels from within vineyards. As soil types and aspects can vary considerably even in a seemingly homogeneous vineyard, they seek those ‘sweet spots’ that consistently produce superior fruit. The consequence of this approach is, of course, extremely limited production. However, their reward is an ability to produce high quality wines.

"If there were a New Zealand Chardonnay that could compete with Barry White, here it is". Rebecca Gibb MW

"Novum deserves to be on every wine lovers radar". Bob Campbell (Real Review)

"If only all white burgundy smelt this clean and compelling. Crystalline fruit. Good, medium weight of pure fruit that’s already intense but promises much more in the future. Long and complex". Jancis Robinson MW

Generally regarded as the launch point for the modern NZ wine world, Marlborough is as stunning to see as it is hospitable for growing Sauvignon Blanc. Cool, sea-lashed nights and warm days create long ripening seasons, giving NZ savvy's a fresh, green and intense flavour with wonderfully balanced acid. Drink them young, and enjoy them with seafood. History While wine has been produced in this region for decades (yeah, we hate to think that the 70's were THAT long ago), the 1980's were the watermark for Marlborough. The Sauvignon Blanc's were gaining attention for being as good, if not better, than anywhere else. This was aided by a gradual decline i ... Read Full Article

History

While wine has been produced in this region for decades (yeah, we hate to think that the 70's were THAT long ago), the 1980's were the watermark for Marlborough. The Sauvignon Blanc's were gaining attention for being as good, if not better, than anywhere else. This was aided by a gradual decline in making the wine with a smokey, oaked style. Clean and crisp with limed acid became the fashion, and critics showered them with praise. By the late 90's, many were writing that Marlborough was the best spot on earth to grow Sauvignon Blanc.
