Mr. Riggs 'Burnt Block' Shiraz 2016

$50.00
This is the wine formerly know as Scarce Earth. The Scarce Earth program has (perhaps temporarily) been suspended… hence the new name and livery. Fruit, as always comes from Ben Riggs Piebald Gully vineyard in McLarenvale, specifically from the ‘burnt block’. The block comprises Maslin sand. This is a vibrant wine, combining power with lifted, bright blue and black fruits. There’s complexity already and compelling acidity pummelling fruit from the tip of your tongue to a long finish. Tannins are finer and a touch less chalky than normal. This is superb.

Mr Riggs has been making flash wine for quite some time. He was Wirra Wirra’s chief winemaker for 14 years and simultaneously a flying winemaker turning out tasty tinctures in the Napa Valley, Bordeaux, Greece, Italy and the South of France. He has consulted to Penny’s Hill, Pertaringa, K1 wines, Battle of Bosworth, Dog Ridge, Tatiarra, Tomich, Morambro Creek, Jip Jip Rocks, Joureys End, Auswan and Sanguine Estate. In 2001 he started making wines under the moniker of Mr Riggs, picking up a slew of accolades along the way.

Mr Riggs, Penny's Hill, Woop Woop, Zonte’s Footstep We often joke that there must be more than one Ben Riggs, that no one winemaker could have his hands in such a range of premium McLaren Vale wineries. And yet, after thorough research (we asked) he has not cloned himself. With 14 years making wine at Wirra Wirra alone, Ben's experience totals a quarter century of producing notable wines, including Penny's Hill, Tatiarra, and Cazal Viel in France. But his real love for McLaren Vale remains, and along with Tony Parkinson, he has crafted successful brands like Woop Woop and his own Mr. Riggs. With such a broad portfolio, Ben picks up awards ... In case you haven't noticed, Mr. Riggs is prolific in winemaking like the Pacific Ocean is kinda big and wet. It is an understatement to say he is a vital part of McLaren Vale wine. He's had decades of experience in the Vale, Victoria and overseas, so he knows a thing or two about making good wine, and this label is his solo act. His Shiraz, Tempranillo and Riesling have been garnering Gold and Silver for years, so get in or miss out, as the saying goes.

Ben Riggs sources fruit from a number of McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards. As a member of the Galvanised Wine Group, Ben's relationship with these growers and McLaren Vintners gives him a great portfolio of fruit to create with.

We often joke that there must be more than one Ben Riggs, that no one winemaker could have his hands in such a range of premium McLaren Vale wineries.

Riggs.

With such a broad portfolio, Ben picks up awards with regularity. Twice named Bushing King (for making the best wine at the McLaren Vale Wine Show), and winning the first two Great Australian Shiraz Challenges. His wines have also won best in show at the Sydney International Top 100 (1991 Wirra Wirra "Angelus").
