Monterra McLaren Vale Shiraz 2018

Special Price $22.00 Regular Price $30.00
Very bright blue and black fruits here along with plums, on what is a lush and inviting nose bursting with bright fruits. There's richness on the palate balanced by tangy acidity, depth of flavour and spice too. Length is excellent. Strike a balance between poised, pointy and plush beautifully. Drink now with gusto or cellar for 5-8. Made by Mike Farmilo, former Penfolds Grange maker and 2 times Jimmy Watson winner.

Monterra is a brand split across the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. Mike Farmilo is the winemaker here, former maker of Penfolds Grange and twice winner of the Jimmy Watson trophy. Brad Rey is also heavily involved (Zonte’s Footstep). The quality of the reds is superb, as the medal cabinet attests. The 15 Merlot is varietal and rich and a gold medal winner. The Nero d’Avola is superb, a deserved trophy winner. We also love the Shiraz, which has picked up a gold medal and was also awarded best wine in class at the Winemaker Challenge in 2017.

A Quick Chat with Mike Farmilo & Nathan Hughes of Willunga 100

To celebrate International Grenache Day this year we opted to hold a bit of a Masterclass on what is quite possibly our favourite variety. We invited a few of our regulars along and figured we may as well get old mate, winemaker extraordinaire, Mike Farmilo (ex-Grange winemaker and 2 x Jimmy Watson winner) along to walk us through a few vintages of Willunga 100 Grenache in its various guises: their 'regular' Grenache - sour cherries, raspberries, savouriness and persistent length (in fact, I'm enjoying one right now as I type); their 'The Hundred' Grenache - completely unoaked, allowing the grape's natural sweetness and spice to shine through; and their 'The Tithing' Grenache - a premium offering which is lush and velvety. While we were setting up we had a quick chat to both Mike and Willunga 100's Sales Marketing Manager and all-round good fella, Nathan Hughes.
