Mitolo Jester Shiraz 2018

Special Price $22.00 Regular Price $25.00
Strong and gentle, as per the Mitolo motto. Red plums, vanilla and clove on the nose, blackberries and mulberries on the palate, the tannins fine and supple. A great wine to pair with braised meats.

The Mitolos arrived in Oz in the 1950s, ex the Abruzzo winemaking region of Italy and began market gardening. Later Frank started making wine for family and friends to drink. That was humming along until a quick chat turned into a 5-hour discussion with legendary winemaker Ben Glaetzer, culminating in a 6-word business plan written on a napkin – ‘Individuality, integrity, quality, purity, elegance and power’. Grapes are sourced from family friends and exceptional growers, the Loprestis. Power comes from the heavy clay soils, elegance thanks to the gentle afternoon sea breezes. This inherent complexity ties in neatly with the business plan and winery motto, originally from Abruzzo, ‘Forte a Gentile: strong and gentle.’

The climate is markedly different from the Barossa, being much more Mediterranean with four clear seasons and higher rainfalls. McLaren Vale reds reflect this, showing deep complexity and power along with the ability to cellar for decades. The climate is influenced by ocean breezes coming in from the Gulf of St. Vincent to the west and the altitude of the Sellicks Hill Range to the south. Soil type is varied, ranging from red-brown loam and sand to dark clay and the often-mentioned terra rosa. A misspell of the Italian phrase "terra rossa" (meaning "red soil"), this ruddy-red stuff is left behind when limestone breaks down, and any viticulturist will tell you it's great stuff to grow vines in due
