Mitchell Kalmar Vineyard Shiraz 2018

Special Price $45.00 Regular Price $50.00
2018 was a pretty fine vintage, and the Mitchell Kalmar Vineyard, quite close to cellar door is an exceptional vineyard. Soooo, in 2018 the Mitchells made the call to pick, vinify and bottle this vineyard with the intention of releasing a standalone wine. It is a ripper, blacker, denser and with exceptional potential for ageing. The Kalmar is laden with black fruits, graphite, spice and more. The texture here is thick, without being overwhelming, and the palate extremely long. Drinkable now, yeppers, but will cellar like a champ too.

Mitchell is a legendary Aussie producer. The Mitchell wine story began in 1949 when Peter McNichol Mitchell arrived in the Clare and planted vines. Grandson Andrew established a winery in 1975 and has been producing ever since. He was one of the early pioneers of using refrigeration in Riesling production to help retain aromatics. Today the Michell’s own about 170 acres of vineyard, much of which they have planted themselves, and all of which are farmed according to organic principles. Jane Mitchell, who works in all aspects of the business and has also served on the South Australian Tourism Commission and been a board member of the Australian Regional Winemakers Forum, the Winemakers Federation of Australia Council and the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation board. Along with other legends like Wolf Blass and d’Arry Osborne she has been made a life member of the Australian Wine Industry.

130km north of Adelaide (and west of the Barossa), the Clare Valley sits within a high-altitude pocket granting the vineyards cool to cold nights with long, warm to hot summer days. This cooler climate grants thin-skinned (and indeed temperamental) grapes like rieslings a perfect climate in which to mature slowly without risk of mould during the harvest season. The resulting wines are perfumed, complex, softly flavoured yet powerful. There are several sub-regions in the 35km stretch of valley, pocketed with varying soils, altitudes and climates.

West-facing, high-altitude slopes benefit from drying afternoon sun in summer, producing some of the regions best vintages. The vines are planted from 400 to 500 metres (1,300 to 1,600 ft). The higher altitude, compared to other wine regions in South Australia, ensures cool nights even during the heat of summer allowing the fruit to ripen more evenly and slowly. Soil is a mix of red to brown-grey over basement rock.
