Massena 'Fruit Salad Block' Field Blend 2017

Special Price $22.00 Regular Price $28.00
As Campbell Mattinson and Mike Bennie have said in separate reviews… ‘What a ripper’. From the famous Stonegarden vineyard in the Eden Valley. This white is made from seriously old vines and perhaps as many as 20 different varieties including Riesling, Muscat, Verdelho, Grenache and Mataro. There’s minerality, chalkiness, stone fruits, spices and all manner of other deliciousness going on. Indeed, this is a ripper.

In a scene that today seems almost as bizarre as Donald Trump becoming POTUS, a patch of 60 year old Shiraz vines in the North-Western Greenock district of the Barossa was close to being bulldozed. With a lot of love for the Barossa’s old vines and perhaps a dash of foresight, mates Dan and Jaysen lobbied the grower to sell the fruit to them instead, and the “Eleventh Hour” Shiraz was born. It’s racked up plenty of accolades over the last decade or so. Massena also produce rippingly good wines from Riesling, Viognier, Mataro, Saperavi, Tannat, Durif, Barbera and Primitivo.

Adjacent to the eastern edge of the Barossa Valley, Eden Valley is not actually a valley. Allegedly, early settlers found the word "Eden" scratched into a tree and named the town Eden Valley. What we do know is that it produces fantastic riesling and chardonnay, having a cooler, higher-altitude climate than the Barossa. Reds of great merit come from here as well, with producers like Henschke dazzling tasters worldwide. Soil is dry and sandy, laying across windswept hills. A bit of a challenge for growers, with vineyards scattered throughout the region to take advantage of winter rainfall and the cooler temperatures. Altitude is 400-600 metres above ... The muscat variety of grapes of the species Vitis vinifera is widely grown for wine, raisins and table grapes. Their color ranges from white to near black. Muscat almost always has a pronounced sweet floral aroma. History Muscat grapes are grown around the world, and the breadth and number of varieties of muscat suggest that it is perhaps the oldest domesticated grape variety. There are theories that most families within the Vitis vinifera grape variety are descended from the Muscat variety. Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania have analyzed pots from King Midas's burial mound and determined that Muscat grapes were a key component of the al ... Read Full Article

Verdelho is a white wine grape grown throughout Portugal, though most associated with the island of Madeira, and also gives its name to one of the four main types of Madeira wine. At the turn of the 20th century it was the most widely planted white grape in Madeira. History The variety of Madeira wine known as Verdelho lies between those of Sercial and Bual in style, being drier than Bual but not as dry as Sercial. The variety is known for its high acidity when aged, but if drunk young generally possesses more fruit flavor than the other Madeiras. Some producers are experimenting with making a table-style wine by allowing the grapes to ripen more pri ... Read Full Article
