Kaesler Durif 2016

Special Price $30.00 Regular Price $35.00
The descriptor ‘Shiraz on steroids’ applies well here. There aren’t too many wines this black or this deep. At first taste you can tell the wine is well structured, yet it seems to have minimal tannin. Keep sipping and you’ll find a zombie army of incredibly fine tannins marching across your palate, building as they travel. Fruit is black, arguably black hole and there are aromas of smoked meats and cold fires. It’s probably time to ignite the charcoal and have yourself a barbie or a wood oven pizza.

The Kaesler family arrived in the Barossa Valley from Sliesia in the 1840s. They bought land in the Barossa in 1891 and spent 2 years furiously planting, after which time they had 96 acres planted to Grenache, Shiraz, Marato and a few white varieties. 21 Years ago Reid Bosward and a few mates bought the farm from the Kaesler family... benefitting from an estate where the youngest red vines were at least 40 years of age. The wines are still produced entirely from the estate grown vines. Reid and co also own wineries and brands elsewhere in Australia including the Clare Valley, McLaren Vale and the legendary Yarra Yering winery. Kaesler is an exceptional winery unsurprisingly rated 5 red stars by James Halliday, which is his highest possible rating.

Durif was originally something of a Rutherglen secret, with typically brilliant wines made by Morris, Stanton and Killeen, Campbells, Fairfield and others. Of late it has quickened its stride with plantings in the Barossa, Riverland and McLaren Vale. I love it and I reckon it’s got legs in the glass with it’s high alcohol and in the vineyard because of the stunning wines it so often produces. Read Full Article
