First made in 1970, Eileen Hardy McLaren Vale Shiraz is one of Australia's great wines. There was a bit of a blip in the 80s when the winemaking team experimented with low baume, low alcohol ferments. These smelled incredible while fermenting but were ultimately anemic in bottle and the experiment was short lived. This is complex, powerful and yet accessible. Black fruits, plum, mulberry, blackberry, graphite, smoked meats, iron and more happening here. Power with elegance, fine tannins and magnificent oak respectfully applied.
Hardy's was founded in 1853 on the banks of the Torrens River and has since become one of the biggest wine companies on Earth, making everything from decent quaffers to world class show stoppers.
This week we sipped on not one, not two but three bottles of Mr Riggs Montepulciano wine. Mr Riggs is a James Halliday 5 star rated winery which is a pretty amazing achievement in itself. You know when you crack open any wine from these guys we are talking about a glass of seriously good wine and this one didn't disappoint either!
This might seem like a strange one, but I can honestly say that this combo really works. Usually, when you think of burgers you lean towards a beer, or even a nice glass of red. The freshness of the apple, spice coming through from the tomato jam, and the addition of pork had me leaning towards a Riesling.
