Pinot, Cab, Shiraz and GSM

You’ve been asking for more diverse packs — so here’s one to consider, and at just $15 a bottle.

Four drink-now beauties here.

Kilikanoon’s GSM leads the way: intense, spicy and smooth, and Kim Brebach’s pick for best GSM of the past 12 months.

Next is Brancott’s six-gold-medal-winning Marlborough Pinot Noir — polished, vibrant and seriously impressive.

We’ve also included the 50th vintage of the legendary Leasingham Bin 61 Shiraz — a soft, spicy and supple Clare Valley classic.

Finally, The Wine by Thoms Cabernet Sauvignon. From a single, close-planted Coonawarra vineyard, it’s drinking beautifully now, with lifted fragrance, black fruits and fine, powdery tannins.

Kilikanoon grow or buy a vast quantity of Clare Grenache - no surprise then that they produce some of the finest Grenache in the Valley. They also arguably produce the region's best Shiraz, 'hello Kilikanoon Revelation and Attunga'. Their GSMs also fare well - the current $40 a bottle Baudinet having picked up multiple trophies. So, we're very excited to introduce the first ever Kilikanoon Meymans GSM, a mid-weight, complex and textural beast which offers comforting blue and black fruit, spice and whisper fine tannins. We love it.

Leasingham wines have been around since the 1890s and have been steered by a series of legendary winemakers over the years. It wasn’t until the early 70s that the Bin series kicked off, with a Bin 61 Shiraz and a Bin 56 Cab Malbec. These were both highly prized for their exceptional quality and regular ability to out-perform wines selling at 2-3 times their asking price. A few of us from WD were lucky enough to attend a vertical tasting with Tim Knappstein (one of the aforementioned and legendary Leasingham alumni) a decade or so ago and came away incredibly impressed with the quality and consistency of the wines. We looked at over 20 vintages, and everything we tasted was still showing fruit, the best of them were exceptional. So it’s a little sad that the '21 may be the last vintage of the Bin 61 Shiraz. Lots of good stuff here, black tea, chocolate, coffee grounds, mint, plum, charcuterie, and blackberries. The overall impression is of mid-weight fruit, an even balance between softness, fine tannin and good length. Cracking value for money. Drink now through 2030.
    Coonawarra, SA
    92pts James Halliday

Made From: Close-planted Cabernet Sauvignon from a single vineyard on Coonawarra’s famed Terra Rossa soils.

Aromas and Flavours: Blackberry, black cherry, violet, plumstone, liquorice, dried herbs, fresh espresso, spice and black tea, supported by cedary oak and gravelly tannins.

Drink if you like: Cool-climate Cabernet with ripeness and structure.

Pair With: Lamb or other red meats.

    Awards: 92pts James Halliday.

Fun Fact: Shows well on opening, but improves with air – worth decanting, or try the “day two test” for even greater reward.

The Wine: Minuscule production from a tiny close-planted block. A little tight at first, but that’s the sign of a Cabernet with decades ahead of it. Decant, or open and give it 30 minutes in the glass, and you’ll find layered black and blue fruits, spice, liquorice, dried herbs and espresso notes. Structured and savoury, with fine gravelly tannins and cedary oak. Impressive now, excellent tomorrow, and likely superb for 10–20 years.

    6 x Gold Medals
Mid-weight, easy drinking and varietal, this offers spice, cherries, violet, red fruits, beetroot, savoury characters and plenty of relatively fine tannins. It is super easy to drink but could be cellared for 5 years we reckon.
