96pt 2025 Briar Ridge Briar Hill Chardonnay valued at $50
96pts James Halliday
Hand harvested fruit is pressed into French oak where it matures for 9 months on lees with plenty of bâtonnage. It is then racked into tank where it stays for an extra couple of months on its solids, encouraging the funky, slightly sulfidic characters that often mark great Chardonnay. This one offers, green apple, limey nuances, and creaminess. Fruit is super focused.
Briar Ridge's Single Vineyard Chardonnay block is grown on well-drained sandy loam soils located in the Hunter Valley. This wine comes entirely from their best Chardonnay block which is south facing and planted on a 450-million-year-old marine fossil ridge. The crop yields are relatively low, producing excellent concentration of fruit flavour.
