Dee Vine Estate The Drover Pinot Grigio 2025

$8.00

Light, clear, mouthwatering and zippy. Plenty of fresh green apple and juicy pears on the go here. Crisp and refreshing, the light body allowing exceptional fruits to shine. This is a wonderfully sating first glass that then demands a second. We bench tested this against PG's at 2 and 3 times the price and it came out comfortably ahead of them. A Gold, Top Gold and Trophy Winner at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show.

Dee Vine Estate was established by brothers Michele and Domenico Scarfone, who emigrated from Southern Italy in 1956 to settle at Nericon within the Riverina. They planted the first vines on the property in ‘57, with the vision of producing traditional and high quality Italian wines. Three generations later, Adrian Bianchini and Fernando Rombola have significantly expanded from their grandfather’s original parcel of land, whilst following the same principles. They make excellent wines.

Pinot Gris is a white wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. Thought to be a mutant clone of the Pinot Noir grape, it normally has a grayish-blue fruit, accounting for its name ("gris" meaning "grey" in French) but the grape can have a brownish pink to black and even white appearance. The word "Pinot", which means "pinecone" in French, could have been given to it because the grapes grow in small pinecone-shaped clusters. The wines produced from this grape also vary in colour from a deep golden yellow to copper and even a light shade of pink, and it is one of the more popular grapes for orange wine. It was the Seppeltsfield DP 117 Dry Flor Apera Sherry which won out on the evening - We tried the 2013 Sidewood Mappinga Fume Sauvignon Blanc which worked well and while we had Yalumba’s 2016 Eden Valley Viognier on the table we didn’t even open that because the sherry had already established itself as the perfect accompaniment.

In Australia

Pinot Gris was first introduced into Australia in 1832 in the collection of grapes brought by James Busby. In Victoria, wines from the grape are labeled both Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio, depending on the sweetness of wine with the drier wines being labeled Pinot Grigio.

Lining the banks of the Murray River, the Riverland is defined as the region running from Blanchetown (about an 80km drive northeast of Adelaide) through Renmark to the Victorian border. Being inland and warm, this large stretch of farmable land has an abundance of sunshine and low humidity in summer, and produces a large crop of grapes, primarily Chardonnay. How large? About half of South Australia's total grape crop, and a quarter of Australia's. It's a big region.

HIstory

The climate classified as continental, translating into warm days and cool nights. Grapes don't do well when mould gets to them, so the low humidity with long, sunny days in the Riverland are the reason this region produces such a quantity of fruit. Soils vary, but break into two basic types: sandy over clay, and sandy over limestone. That means it drains the annual rainfalls without leaving a lot of mud behind (which average less than 300mm across the region). Drought has hit the area hard in the last decade, ensuring
