Claymore 'London Calling' Cabernet Malbec 2019

$22.00
A big, strapping blend of 70% Cab and 30% Malbec from the region that makes these blends most effortlessly. There’s a juicy plushness and the scent of violets from the Malbec, with the Cab bringing grunty black fruits, greenery and fine savoury tannins. Awesome already, this will also reward a decade’s patience.

A 5 star James Halliday-rated winery, Claymore Wines began in 1997 with just a tiny amount of Grenache and Riesling but have flourished into one of the Clare Valley’s best-known producers. They signed a 3-year contract in 2015 with English Football giants Liverpool, much to the dismay of our Manchester United tasting panel member Dan. Even Dan, though, cannot let his football bias affect how truly great the Claymore wines are! Their labels are inspired by some of the great music of the modern times, from Pink Floyd to Prince to The Verve and even a little Stevie Wonder. All in all, fantastic wines with an edgy feel. Whether you want to open a bottle and belt out a riff, or warm up the vocals and sing “you’ll never walk alone”, Claymore have you covered! Vegan Red Wines

130km north of Adelaide (and west of the Barossa), the Clare Valley sits within a high-altitude pocket granting the vineyards cool to cold nights with long, warm to hot summer days. This cooler climate grants thin-skinned (and indeed temperamental) grapes like rieslings a perfect climate in which to mature slowly without risk of mould during the harvest season. The resulting wines are perfumed, complex, softly flavoured yet powerful. There are several sub-regions in the 35km stretch of valley, pocketed with varying soils, altitudes and climates. West-facing, high-altitude slopes benefit from drying afternoon sun in summer, producing some of the region ... Read Full Article

In Australia

The grapevine was introduced to Australia in the 19th century and was mostly a bulk wine producing grape. The particular clones planted in Australia were of poor quality and highly susceptible to coulure, frost and downy mildew. By the mid to late 20th century, many acres of Malbec were uprooted and planted with different varieties. By 2000, there were slightly over 1,235 acres (500 acres), with the Clare Valley having the most significant amount. As newer clones become available, plantings of Malbec in Australia have increased slightly.

This cooler climate grants thin-skinned (and indeed temperamental) grapes like rieslings a perfect climate in which to mature slowly without risk of mould during the harvest season. There are several sub-regions in the 35km stretch of valley, pocketed with varying soils, altitudes and climates. West-facing, high-altitude slopes benefit from drying afternoon sun in summer, producing some of the regions best vintages. The vines are planted from 400 to 500 metres (1,300 to 1,600 ft). The higher altitude, compared to other wine regions in South Australia, ensures cool nights even during the heat of summer allowing the fruit to ripen more evenly and slowly. Soil is a mix of red to brown-grey over basement rock.
