Champagne Bouché Père et Fils Le Clos Le Point du Jour 2014
Just 3,048 bottles were produced from a single ‘Clos’ planted to Meunier in 1967.
There are just 39 ‘Clos’ or walled vineyards in Champagne - these are recognised for having unique microclimates. The use of the term ‘Clos’ on Champagne labels is heavily regulated and renowned for producing tiny quantities of extraordinary wine particularly from the Grand and Premier Cru sites.
This is one of the finest Champagnes we’ve ever encountered! It is gloriously fruited and complex with fresh fruit, chocolate, vanilla, citrus peel, brioche and spice supported by an incredibly fine bead. The oak is second use, which formerly matured high end White Burgundy. Post 16 months in oak, the wine then spent an additional 9 years on lees in bottle prior to disgorgement. Persistence and complexity are incredible.

Krug’s Clos d’ Ambonnay produces up to 5,100 bottles and retails for around $5,500 a bottle! Their Clos du Mesnil produces an average of just 11,000 bottles a year and will only set you back $2,000-$4,000 depending on the vintage, lol.
Clos des Goisses comes in at a far more reasonable $1,300
These are expensive wines and typically very hard to get.
By now you have probably guessed I'm partial to a glass of wine or two! Yes, I do drink other drinks but wine with dinner after a day of parenting is, well ESSENTIAL!! I have visited many wineries and am part of quite a few wine clubs, and along with visiting local independent bottle shops, I pick up some GREAT bargains online. A good chunk of those come from winedirect.com.au and my mate Dan who is the business development manager there!
What's dinner without wine? Well, it's technically still dinner but it defo ain't as good a dinner ;) This mighty chicken caesar sandwich deserves an equally good wine to sip (before), with (and after) it. I've chosen a Santa & D'Sas Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley for this one. Rated highly by Mr Halliday, this delicious drop is at a great price at winedirect.com.au.
Something of a trinity of lovely light flavours: wine, whiting and pasta. Brilliant, great for a summer repast. Use a quality dry white while cooking and serve it with the meal.
We packed Matt off to Prowein and Champagne again this year to hunt down some quality reds from Europe and perhaps another Champagne producer or 2 to add to the 3 awesome producers we already import... Click here to see the Champagne houses we currently import and you can check out some articles on our previous expeditions via this search query.
Prowein was especially nuts this year, with 6,500 exhibitors from over 60 countries showing their wares (that’s around 4,000 more producers than there are in Australia) and about 60,000 trade visitors tasting and buying.
About to elbow through the scrum – over 6000 wineries on show and 60000 buyers.
What, me Jetlagged? About to catch up with Bernard Remy.
Meeting Schola Sarmenti at Prowein – amazing wines and a lovely Grappa.
The brief to Matt was simple: elbow your way through the scrum and find us the good stuff... reds good enough for Aussies to drink and that are cracking value for money. On previous trips Matt had just been hunting for Champagne
