Moscato: loved and reviled in equal measure. Much of it is made from the inexpensive neutral grapes available—but there are exceptions.
Lake Breeze make a very good one, and Quealy in the Mornington make a cracker too. De Bortoli fly under the radar as well. No doubt there are others.
The Chalk Hill belongs in this excellent company, made from superb fruit, a little drier than average, and crafted by legendary winemaker Renae Hirsch. Expect tropical fruits, lychee, blackcurrant pastille and plenty more going on here.
It’s plenty sweet without being cloying, with great acidity, and will be synergistic when poured with a ripe brie or Fromager d'affinois double cream, served with a spicy laksa, or alongside a fig and prosciutto pizza.
