Moscato: loved and reviled in equal measure. Much of it is made from the inexpensive neutral grapes available—but there are exceptions.

Lake Breeze make a very good one, and Quealy in the Mornington make a cracker too. De Bortoli fly under the radar as well. No doubt there are others.

The Chalk Hill belongs in this excellent company, made from superb fruit, a little drier than average, and crafted by legendary winemaker Renae Hirsch. Expect tropical fruits, lychee, blackcurrant pastille and plenty more going on here.

It’s plenty sweet without being cloying, with great acidity, and will be synergistic when poured with a ripe brie or Fromager d'affinois double cream, served with a spicy laksa, or alongside a fig and prosciutto pizza.

A family business for six generations, the Harvey clan have six vineyards spread across McLaren Vale going back to 1897. Chalk Hill wines are small batch, hand crafted wines of distinction, reflective of the unique growing qualities of the region. Chalk Hill also owns the most excellent Alpha Crucis brand making staggeringly good, super premium kit. For value though it’s hard to go past the Chalk Hill branded kit in the $20-30 price range. These wines regularly pick up golds, trophies and big points from wine scribes.

Ali's Fondue Recipe
Read our last article on Fondue? Here's the recipe! It was the Seppeltsfield DP 117 Dry Flor Apera Sherry which won out on the evening - We tried the 2013 Sidewood Mappinga Fume Sauvignon Blanc which worked well and while we had Yalumba’s 2016 Eden Valley Viognier on the table we didn’t even open that because the sherry had already established itself as the perfect accompaniment.
