Debuting is the Colab and Bloom Sangiovese, an excellent example of this medium weight variety offering bright fruits and a long finish. From the Adelaide Hills is another debutant from Wicks Estate with their CJ Reserve Cabernet, arguably one of the best cool climate cabernets we've seen this year offering mint and eucalypt and structure to age beyond 10 years. Next is the latest release of Yaldara’s glorious flagship Shiraz worth $250 a bottle from the much celebrated 21 vintage. Always bold and rich, a must for the cellar. Rounding out this selection is the impressive Curtis Small Batch Shiraz sourced from vines dating back 80+ years. Oozing dark berries and chocolate this wine will reward long term cellaring but for those with less patience, half an hour in the decanter will release this beauty.

PLUS the kicker, the spectacular new release of Pasha McLaren Vale Shiraz, an impressive follow up to the 2018 which has twice triumphed at the Grange Challenge.

    The 2018 vintage was one of our finds of the year, being old school, gnarly and dense but with exceptional length. No surprise it took on Grange in a blind tasting and scored more points for wine of the night. The 2019 is an able successor, belting out the same tune from the same hymn book (by that we obviously mean 'Hallelujah' by Lenny Cohen, with Jeff Buckley providing backup vocals). It's dark, graphite-y and dense but with bright notes reflecting the author's lofty aspirations. It needs decanting - as Lenny once wrote, 'Decant everything, that's how the air gets in.'     The 2021 Yaldara Grand is a straight Shiraz, owing to the concentration and profundity of the Shiraz fruit from this vintage. Unsurprisingly, this offers more power and concentration than any previous vintage. A massive, deep and complex expression of the best bits of the Barossa Valley. Dark chocolate, liquorice, tobacco leaf, blue and black fruits, cedar, cassis, plums, cherries, spice and plenty of cedary oak and tannins. Incredible.

    A black, plush, and full-bodied Shiraz made from 80-year-old vines. Exceptional fruit intensity here, and weight of black fruits on the palate. Opulence is balanced by judicious acidity and there’re plenty of tannins driving through to an epic conclusion. Decant if you are going to enjoy now, otherwise cellar!
    Adelaide Hills, SA
    A full bodied, intense and varietal Cab from the warm 2018 vintage, tamed by close to 2 years’ maturation in 60% new French oak, and a few years bottle age. Drinking beautifully already, this offers black fruits, violet, tobacco leaf and dark chocolate. Works beautifully with all things lamb.

    A stunningly complex Sangio which opens up over 24 hours. So this one is definitely worth decanting! Red fruits, wood smoke, chalky tannins, rhubarb, blue fruits, tarragon, thyme and graphite. A stunning accompaniment to a meat and cheese plate, prosciutto pizza and most tapas.

    There are so many exciting talking points in this pack, but let’s start with the Italian wines. We have already featured Conte di Campiano in the past, but the Nero di Troia is a new wine to us. It has plums, black pepper and tobacco and is super silky. Relatively high in acidity backed by plenty of fine tannins. Very slurpable indeed. The other is the Vini Giribaldi Rie Organic Barbera di Alba Riserva 2015. Packed to the brim with red berries and assertive acidity. Definitely decant this one to see the best of it. The other exciting aspect of the pack is new wines from Lone Palm Vineyard and Stonehouse. The Lone Palm Hillside Shiraz and Crossings Shiraz are both sourced from the prized Marananga sub-region of the Barossa Valley. Each vineyard shows different use of French and American oak, but they both have something in common; they are amazing. The Stonehouse Reserve Quartz Block Icon Shiraz is the big one, a massive $150RRP and just as big and powerful as the price tag. Black and blue fruit packaged with some chocolate and cinnamon and fine oak tannin. Delicious. Through the Tasting Glass Cheshire Cat Shiraz is another stunning Barossa Valley Shiraz made by Andrew Hardy. It has violets along with black and blue fruits galore and it is definitely a prospect for the cellar. Some familiar faces you should find in the pack include the delicious Manser Dad’s Block Shiraz, from our own Phil Manser, Heirloom’s stunning new vintage of their Barossa Shiraz and a pair of premiums from Martins Vineyard and Richard Hamilton Centurion. There is also a lovely new Shiraz from Wits End Atlas that needs no cellaring, it is best enjoyed fresh and juicy. The last wine in the bunch is the Kilikanoon Meymans Shiraz Cabernet. Clare Valley is best known for Riesling, but Shiraz and Cabernet, especially under the watchful eye of Kevin Mitchell this Shiraz Cab is a belter. There you have it, all that premium red with a massive $600 off the RRP. Merry Christmas indeed!
