Bonny Doon 'Vin Gris de Cigare' Rosé 2020

Special Price $40.00 Regular Price $50.00
This exceptional wine from Santa Cruz in California will appeal to drinkers of Provence Rosé thanks to the varietals Grenache and Cinsault featuring prominently and the extended lees used in its production. The result is a brightly fruited wine with a creamy texture and excellent length … which is also why this wine will appeal to drinkers of quality buttery Chardonnay and aged Semillon. Wild strawberries, guava, peach, rhubarb and white pepper in evidence here. An absolute cracker.

Bonny Doon was founded by Randall Grahm in the 1980s, initially with the desire to make Burgundian style wines in California. T’wasn’t long before he realized Rhone/Provence varietals worked better and he began cranking out Le Cigar Volant, his very successful homage to the great wines of the Rhone. Randall pioneered micro oxidation, screwcaps and truth in labelling in California too. His wines are organic, biodynamic and vegan friendly – eschewing winemaking artefact in favour of allowing fruit quality to shine. The name of his most famous wine, “Le Cigar Volant’ (the Flying Cigar) comes from a 1954 by-law from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape, banning the landing of flying saucers in local vineyards. Given his approach to tread lightly on the earth whilst producing exceptional wines from Rhone varietals, this seemed a fine name for his inaugural, and most famous wine. The backstory? In 1954, when the world was in a bit of a tizz about aliens and flying saucers, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape village council was bricking it at the possibility of UFOs landing in and damaging vineyards. So, clever clogs, one and all, they passed a legal ordinance prohibiting such landings. So far, this legislation has had the intended effect. No reports of an@! probes either. Huzzah!

Our Italian Imports have landed!

We tasted hundreds of wines earlier this year at the massive German Trade wine fair, Prowein, at the Italian wine expo Vinitaly and throughout various Italian wine regions. Overseas we tasted and reviewed the wines at least twice and then we did it all again as a panel back in Australia, tasting and reviewing the best wines from those shortlisted for consideration. We settled on a very select few - just the 17 superb wines which are now in stock. Drum roll please…

Here’s a little info on each of the wineries from which we have chosen to import these beautiful wines:

Ca’ de Lion is a boutique producer which has been based in the Piedmont since 1655, making wine for many, many years. We’ve chosen to start with two of their brilliant Barberas from Asti. These are exceptional examples of Barbera and we
