Bodega Valdehermoso Sotavento Verdejo 2024

$50.00

Spain’s Rueda region makes the best Verdejo (Verdelho) in the world. They have been growing it for centuries and have a combo of hot, dry summers and cold winters with substantial diurnal temp variation which leads to grapes with concentration which retain aromaticity and minerality.

Crisp, yet creamy, the Valdehermoso is an exceptional Rueda Verdejo which is aged on lees in tank to build creaminess whilst remaining intensely aromatic offering herbs, nectarine, fennel and pear, wrapped up in a gorgeously velvety texture and delivered in balance by saline tinged and mouthwatering acidity. Imagine a butterflied chook, smothered in butter and hot smoked paprika, grilling over wood, or at the very least a barbie grill, plated up with a simple salad. Better even than Riesling, or beer (oooh, you can’t say that) this Verdejo might be the perfect accompaniment to a summer feed replete with a few mates or the family around!

Founded formally in 2004 to revive a long family winemaking tradition, the estate quickly established itself with the release of its first Lagar del Rey Verdejo aged on lees. Over the following decade, the team expanded plantings of Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc and Viura/Macabeo, adopted modern vinification technologies, and continually invested in both vineyard care and cellar infrastructure.

Mexican Ceviche
Mexican Ceviche
The explosive lime-iness of this dish would make you reach for a nice cold Corona to wash it down, but an equally great companion is the wine equivalent of a crisp, clean lager. The Tim Adams Pinot Gris fits that bill perfectly with its balance of zesty lemon, crisp apple and pear and fresh mineral flavours but any other good PG will do the job. Summer feasting calls for fresh, tangy and light dishes and a ceviche is a fantastic way to kick off a Mexican feast and get your tastebuds tingling. Ceviche is a seafood dish of raw fish cured in lime juice. This recipe comes from a Mexican friend living in Denmark – her family hold onto their culinary heritage as much as possible but they often have to improvise when they can’t find some of their favourite, more ‘exotic’ ingredients at the supermarket. That’s the great thing about a ceviche – you can make it to suit your own tastes, heat tolerances and what’s available or affordable in your neck of the woods. Serve the ceviche in a big bowl for
