Blue Pyrenees Midnight Cuvée 2016

Special Price $30.00 Regular Price $34.00
Complex and delicate, offering baked apple pie, lemon curd and nougat on the nose. There’s a lovely creaminess on the palate which leads to a dry, cleansing, green apple finish. The bubbles are fine and the price, to quote Huon Hook is ‘a gift’.

Blue Pyrenees has been around for 50 years and is pretty much the best known producer in the Pyrenees region under the guise of wine royalty, Andrew Koerner. Regular trophy and medal winners, they produce superb red, white and traditional method sparkling wines. It’s only a couple of hours from Melbourne and the scenery is spectacular. The region is also home to exceptional wineries like Dalwhinnie, Warrenmang, Summerfield, Taltarni and Mount Avoca. The production of “Methode Traditionnelle” (fermented in this bottle) sparkling wines has been an integral part of the winemaking at Blue Pyrenees Estate for many years. Although handpicked fruit is desirable for the production of premium sparkling juices, daytime temperatures in most Australian wine regions mean that hand-picked fruit is often too warm when received into the press. So in 1992 the team at Blue Pyrenees decided to experiment with hand picking at night, under lights, to optimize both fruit condition & temperature. The results were an amazing improvement — crisper cuvée (free drained) juices of outstanding quality, with higher natural acidity. The Midnight Cuvée was born! In another first for Blue Pyrenees, during harvest 2014, handpicked Chardonnay & Pinot Noir grapes from Macedon Ridge vineyard, were whole bunch pressed, then included with the best Chardonnay parcels from the Blue Pyrenees Estate vineyard, to again lift the natural acidity & freshness of the blend.

For most people, hearing the words 'the Pyrenees' makes their eyes glaze over and look distantly off to the left as they imagine the wonderful joys of Southern France, where it meets the Spanish border. Respond with the statement 'No, I meant the Pyrenees region of Victoria..' and their eyes revert back to the present moment and a quizzical look appears on their faces.. 'There's a Pyrenees in Australia?!' Yes, there most certainly is. Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell, Scottish surveyor and explorer first came upon this land in the year 1836. He was the first European on record to have travelled through this part of Victoria finding it more temperate in climate and better watered than NSW. This section of the Great Dividing Range reminded him of the Pyrenees in France, where he had previously served in battle. The first vineyards were planted here by the Mackareth family in 1848. The winery was said to be quite substantial, however around the end of the First World War, two brothers
