So much goodness here in what is our most premium white pack in ages. It includes two First Creek Semillons, both of which picked up 96 points from Halliday, placing them equal fifth in a field of 180 tasted so far. Then there's a 96 point White Burgundy (aka Chardonnay) from Jean Loron which retails for $120 a bottle. Grant Burge's Savvy Blanc, which picked up the best SB trophy at the Adelaide Show. Plus Jeanneret's $40 a bottle, 96 point Watervale Riesling and Dowie Doole's exceptional, old vine Chenin Blanc. A bit more detail on this one, cos Chenin is not as well known as Rizza, Sem and Chardy. As Kim Brebach wrote when reviewing this wine, 'The best Aussie Chenin Blanc I’ve tasted, by a mile. The wine was matured in French oak, with some lees stirring I suspect. That has added complexity without suppressing the vibrant fruit ... Crunch and real backbone, and will improve with age, even, like those wines from Vouvray on the lower Loire in France. Unheard of. Brilliant.'

    Sourced entirely from the Dowie vineyard in Blewitt Springs which was planted in 1933. These may be the oldest, still bearing chenin blanc vines in Australia. The wine launches with notes of struck match, reflective of the barrel work done with this wine in French oak. The palate is textural, offering red fruits, lemon, ginger, orange blossom with a wonderfully creamy aspect, with some cedary grain from the oak. Acid is plentiful, the finish long and mineral. This is lovely already and will improve for a decade or more. It is on track to be an absolute stunner.

    From an exceptional high altitude (440m) vineyard, this is magnificent. Apple, talcum powder, and honeydew melon on both the nose and a palate which offers a perfect balance between acid drive and texture. Length is exceptional.

    A stunning White Burgundy, aka Chardonnay, from a legendary producer who has been fermenting grapes since 1711. Bill Nanson, of the Burgundy Report, first tasted this wine 3 years ago, offering ‘More complexity and vibrance to this aroma – more barrel too ... a wine that’s more about the future. Wide, saline, concentrated, and certainly mineral. The finish is subtle but very persistent. You should give this wine at least 3 years in the cellar – or I would anyway. Excellent wine, with the potential for great.’ So, we’ve waited 3 years and the wine is ravishingly beautiful – voluptuous yet structured, pendulously stonefruity yet mineral, with a lovely cheese edge that comes from barrel worked and lees stirred Chardonnay. Magic stuff.
