The Halliday Wine Companion Dozen 2024

All exceptional wines, these have each scored 94 or higher from James Halliday, with half of them having scored 96 or 97! Heaps of other bling too, with seven trophies and too many top golds and golds for us to count. This is undoubtedly the best Halliday dozen we've ever put together. Sadly, the volume available is diabolically tiny, hence why we've made it available for subscribers only!

    Wines In This Pack
    McLaren Vale, SA
97pts Kim Brebach, 95pts James Halliday, 94pts Wine Pilot
Wow! A rich, voluptuous yet well structured red from Dandelion’s biodynamic Firehawk Farm vineyard. Inky black fruits are pierced by blackberries and then scented with cedar and spice. Long, rich and balanced. An exceptional wine.
    1 x Schwarz Meta Mataro 2022 (RRP $40.00)
    Barossa Valley, SA
    95pts James Halliday
Handpicked, 17% whole bunch, unfined, unfiltered, unfettered. Exotic spice and blueberry on the nose; same on the palate, plus earthiness, roasting meats, florals, plums and more. Not the typical mono-dimensional or too-ripe presentation here. This is medium bodied, fragrant, and glorious!
    Barossa Valley, SA
95pts James Halliday, 95pts Sam Kim, 95pts Jeni Port, 94pts Wine Pilot
80-year-old vines, 10% whole bunch, 90% whole berries, wild ferment, and 18 months in French oak. Intense, vibrant, and saturated, this offers olive tapenade, aniseed, chocolate, spice, meatiness, and more. Exceptional.
    Barossa Valley, SA
96pts James Halliday, 95pts James Suckling
A wonderful medium- to full-bodied expression of very old vine Barossa Shiraz matured in new and older American oak. There is elegance here, with intense black fruit, five-spice, and chocolate. Delightfully fragrant, too.
    Langhorne Creek, SA
97pts James Halliday, 4 Trophies, 3 x Top Gold Medals, 6 Gold Medals
A casual 97 points from James Halliday! Oh, and four trophies and a 'stacks on' pile of golds and top gold medals. This is dense and complex, whilst also being taut and linear. Awesome now (post decanting), but will live for 20 years with careful cellaring, perhaps more. Red and black fruits here, with quality cedary spindles and exceptional length.
    Langhorne Creek, SA
    96pts James Halliday, 3 x Trophies, 2 x Top Gold, 3 x Gold
Bleasdale are perhaps the greatest producer of Malbec in Australia. They have produced Malbec since the late 1800s and since then have consistently accrued exceptional awards for their Malbec wines. This release already has three trophies, three top golds, three golds and a 96 from Halliday! Intense and generous, it offers blackberries, black olives, satsuma plums, porcini, cloves and spice on the nose. The palate is black and deeply flavoured; the fruit, acid and tannin perfectly balanced. It is excellent already and will cellar for a couple of decades.
    Barossa Valley, SA
96pts Sam Kim, 94pts James Halliday, 94pts James Suckling
Better again than the incredible '21 vintage of the Neldner which was compared by one wine writer to Penfolds Grange. Handpicked grapes from an 80 year old contoured vineyard in Gomersal. Long slow fermentation including more than 10% whole bunch fruit before basket pressing into 30% new oak inc. both French and American. A stunningly perfumed nose leads to a palate with exceptional structure and richness. Red fruits, black fruits, coffee, cherries, red plum, dark chocolate, spice and fine, powdery tannins to finish. A pinnacle Barossa Shiraz experience.
    Adelaide Hills, SA
96pts James Halliday, 12 Gold medal
One of the most insane quality to price ratios on the planet. Hand tended vines are picked by a Pellenc select harvester, which pick just the absolute best fruit. 12 separate clones of Shiraz are fermented separately using wild yeast, given extended maceration on skins and matured in French oak for 15 months. Finally, only the best barrels are blended and bottled. That sounds to us like most high-end producer's $60-$100+ Shiraz. No surprise this has picked up 96 points from Halliday and 12 gold medals.

First Creek and Tyrrell's are arguably the finest producers of Semillon in Australia. Given the world class nature of these wines, it also places them as exceptional producers on the world stage. These top Aussie Semillons are amongst the longest lived white wines on the planet and are a joy to drink from release, when zippy and crunchy with fresh fish or light veg dishes. Once mature, at 10 or 20, or 30 or more years of age, they pair magnificently with chicken, pork, foie gras, blue cheese and soft cheeses. The First Creek Oakey Creek 22 has just picked up 96 from James Halliday and offers an explosion of tropical fruits, peach and citrus, It has exceptional length and liveliness, great now and will cellar incredibly well.

    97pts James Halliday
In the words of James Halliday, who scored this 97 points, ‘This variety is grown all over Corisca, and I've spent days tasting it there. First Creek's effort is extraordinary. It has a perfumed bouquet and a rich palate with a blend of tropical and citrus fruits comforting every part of the mouth and then allowing the inclusion of lime-infused acidity on the finish. Wow.’
    Langhorne Creek, SA
95pts James Halliday, 93pts Kim Brebach
All about the red fruits and plum here, in a fluffy, lush, cuddly, generous and bubbly setting. There’s Christmas cakey spices and a hint of quince paste to boot. Lip smackingly delicious.
