A Sharp Selection of Shiraz and Cab for $160

Here’s quality drinking covered off at quaffing prices. Starting with the lighter wines, we have Zilzie’s Gold medal winning Barossa Shiraz serving up red and black fruits and a sprinkling of cedar. Next up Johnston’s Shiraz is rich and smooth, with shimmering black fruits. On to Zilzie’s Ferghana Cab, a premium offering made from McLaren Vale fruit. It’s big and rich with plenty of fruit and oak. Penna Lane’s Cab from the Clare still looks like a baby despite being 4 years old. It has concentrated varietal fruit and will improve for another decade if you can hide it from yourself. Introducing Lange Estate’s Frankland River Fifth Generation Shiraz. This beast retails for $50 a bottle and on top of the 96 it picked up from Kim Brebach, scored 94 from Ray Jordan, who also crowned Lange the best new winery in his 2020 guide. There’s plenty of dark chocolate, plum, spice, sour cherry, and liquorice plus a swag of quality oak. Finishes savoury with plenty of chalky tannins. Finally, Lone Palm’s ‘Crossings’, a 95 point, $60 a bottle Barossa Shiraz. Sam Kim says, ‘…the wine shows dark berry, spicy oak, olive and game characters on the nose, followed by a wonderfully weighted palate displaying plump mouthfeel and silky tannins. It's generous and expansive with layers of delicious flavours.’

    Barossa Valley, SA
    95pts Sam Kim
Elegant and refined in its stature this is genuine, proper Barossa Shiraz. The fruit is hand-picked, hand plunged and basket pressed before spending 14 months in mostly old French oak resulting in a wine rich and full. Cedary and spiced with deep dark berries.
    Clare Valley, SA
93pts Kim Brebach, 92pts Sam Kim
This is a stunning varietal Cabernet built for the long haul. An hour or two of breathing sees a beautiful perfume emerge, which coalesces with rich fruits to form a deep palate packed with violet, blackcurrant, earth and tomato leaf. Perfect with a big lump of protein. Drink any time over the next 15 years.
    Frankland River, WA
96pts Kim Brebach, 94pts Ray Jordan
A medium to full bodied red with plenty of fruit and a swag of quality oak. Dark chocolate, plum, spice, sour cherry, and liquorice. Finishes savoury and with plenty of chalky tannins.
    McLaren Vale, SA
    92pts Sam Kim
Lush, black, rich and intense, this is an excellent Cabernet Sauvignon from McLaren Vale. Blackcurrants and blackberries, olives and aniseed all at play. While this is already delicious, you could comfortably lay this down for a decade.
    Barossa Valley, SA
    Gold Medal, 90pts Sam Kim
A perfumed, red fruited, gold medal winning Barossa Shiraz. Dark berries and spice, with red fruit flavours ceding to black. There is also toasty oak, good acidity and fine tannin.
    2 x Johnston Shiraz 2020 (RRP $20.00)
    South Australia
Black in colour this is a fairly well-fruited beast. There are blue and black fruits, mocha, spice, French oak and plenty of chalky tannins to finish. Very polished and satisfying. Perfect with something meaty.
