A Quiver of Exquisite Cabernet

A selection of 6 exquisite Cabernet for your consideration. Starting with the lightest but no means light Monterra Cabernets. This is primarily Cab Sauv, with some Cab Franc and Petit Verdot in the mix too. The last time we looked at this it was in a lineup of 49 wines and the entire tasting panel rated it number 1 or number 2 wine of the day. It offers punchy bright red fruits, black tea, pastilles, cedar and super fine tannins. At the other end of the spectrum is the Zilzie Ferghana, which has just picked up 92 points from Sam Kim. This is well oaked, rich, intense, structural and tannic, a big wine featuring the riper spectrum Cab characters, like blackcurrants, olives and aniseed. The other 4 wines all fit somewhere between and are all excellent. Read the long notes for full details on each wine!

    A Quiver of Exquisite Cabernets
    Wines In This Pack
    Coonawarra, SA
95pts Sam Kim, 94pts Tony Love
A classic in the making and one of the very best Cabs we have seen this year. It is rich, yet perfectly structured, flawlessly long and finishes with plenty of fine tannins. It is already lovely but will cellar for 20 years. Cassis, mint, chocolate, dried herbs, dark fruit and just a touch of assertively angular greenery. Sorry, this product is not available individually, only in the pack(s) below.
    McLaren Vale, SA
    92pts Sam Kim
Lush, black, rich and intense, this is an excellent Cabernet Sauvignon from McLaren Vale. Blackcurrants and blackberries, olives and aniseed all at play. While this is already delicious, you could comfortably lay this down for a decade.
    Clare Valley, SA
94pts Kim Brebach, 93pts Sam Kim
This is a deeply fruited, rich and dark red wine. We found blackcurrant plum, cedar, dark chocolate and herbs. There are some big, chalky tannins to finish but they sit well as a backstop to the beautifully intense dark fruits. You could drink this now or anytime over the next decade, perhaps even 20 years.
    Fleurieu Peninsula, SA
2 x Gold Medals, 93pts Wine Pilot, 92pts Mike Bennie, 91pts James Halliday
A stunning blend of Cabernets; Cabernet Sauvignon (66%), Cabernet Franc (32%) and Petit Verdot (2%). We looked at 49 wines in total on the day we tasted this. Everyone picked this wine either as the best wine of the day, their favorite or both. It is perfumed, juicy and crunchy. Punchy red fruits getting jiggy with talcum powder, black tea, pastilles and cedar. It finishes with fine tannins. A joy to drink now and will cellar well for years too.
    Langhorne Creek, SA
    93pts Kim Brebach
A beautifully fragrant and mouthwatering nose laden with violets, blackcurrants and dried oregano leads to a voluptuous palate. This is pristine, varietally perfect, medium bodied Cabernet. A joy to drink by itself and with lamb dishes.
    Coonawarra, SA
    Gold Medal, 91pts Sam Kim
A beautifully mid-weight, gold-winning Coonawarra Cabernet. Juicy red fruits, mint and blackcurrants create a mouthwatering effect, bolstered as they are by ever so slightly bolshy acidity – the finish buttoned-down primly with fine tannins.
