6 Barossa Belters

The sheer volume of bling here gives a pretty good indication of the quality of the booze on offer... 8 golds, 5 scores of 96, 2 at 95 points, and 5 scores of 94 points from established wine writers. Bling is cool for sure, and can certainly help confirm that at least some other sensible peeps rate the wine highly, but it doesn’t tell you what the wines taste like. Check out the long notes, where we describe what we tasted when we looked at these wines on the tasting panel. PS, we don’t just look at these wines once, 5 of the wines in this pack we have already looked at 2 or more times. At time of writing we hadn't had a second run at the Filsell ... by the time you are reading this we’ll have tried it again, we promise.

    Wines In This Pack
    Barossa Valley, SA
Trophy, 6 x Gold Medals, 96pts Wine Matrix, 96pts Sam Kim, 95pts Winestate Magazine
A rich and inviting perfume on the nose, with red fruits, coffee, black fruits, pepper, and clove all in evidence. The palate is rich, big, smooth, and intense and the wine finishes with plush silken tannins. Good already and has the legs to stay out in front for another decade.
    Barossa Valley, SA
96pts Kim Brebach, 94pts Sam Kim (Wine Orbit)
Stunning modern Shiraz from one of the best vintages in the Barossa Valley in living memory. Polished black with exceptional intensity of black and blue fruits this is stunning now and will just keep getting better over the next 10 years. Dip a toe in the water now with a bottle or 2… we are quietly confident you’ll be back for a case or 3 to luxuriate in over the next decade or so.

The Lienert’s have been farming in the Barossa for 150 years and decided to add some vines to their property about 20 years ago. The first fruit from 2004 and 2005 vintages went straight to the pool room, aka into Penfold’s St Henri. Funnily enough they then planted a lot more vines and introduced many more clonal variations of Shiraz. When they decided to start making booze, we conspired with them to come up with a wine from the best parcels of their best seven clonal selections of Shiraz. The intention – to make a wine which is floral and beguiling on the nose, densely fruited on the palate, long, complex and bloody awesome. For this very special wine, each clone was harvested and fermented separately (you can see details on the clones below!) with the harvest date chosen to allow each grape to express its best characters. The case of EVOS12 (Eden Valley clone) was harvest earlier than the others to allow for a beautiful perfume and liveliness in the final wine. Fermentation is done in tiny open top fermenters which are hand plunged up to four times a day. Certain clones are fermented cooler to better express delicate aromatics whilst some are plunged and pumped over to achieve a more structural element. The trick is finding the right balance. Anyways, we love this wine and encourage you to give it a rip.

Big, rich, dark and decadent, this is a lovely and well-balanced Barossa Shiraz. Dark fruits are joined by raspberries, fine tannins and just a little vanillin oak. There is plenty of acid on the finish which would help the wine cut through a rich steak with well-rendered fat.

A truly beautiful and fruit driven blend of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz. The Grenache here brings spice, confected notes, raspberries, rhubarb and sour cherry. The Mataro offers chocolate, brooding brambles and other slightly angry things sourced from dungeons deep. The Shiraz brings blue and black fruits, chocolate and fine, fine tannins. It’s a mad mélange this, one we’ll tip our hat to, whilst asking for it to be filled.

96pts James Halliday, 94pts Wine Showcase Magazine, 95pts Campbell Mattinson, Gold Medal
A brilliant single vineyard Barossa Shiraz brought to you by the Purple Hands team, made by Grant Burge Chief Winemaker Craig Stansborough from fruit off his own vines. Great colour and depth fruit here with dark chocolate coating raspberries, plum and liquorice. Great intensity and depth.
