The Official 2024 Royal Adelaide Wine Show Mixed Dozen

Tough judging this year, with only around 5% of wines picking up a gold, and we can confirm that the quality of this year’s dozen is absolute fire across the board.

Every wine in the pack this year is a gold winner. There are also a couple of trophy winners: the After Five Monte, and Forester’s Shiraz. The latter is 86% Shiraz and 14% Fer… yep, an ancient varietal of Basque origin, which these days is also planted in some southern French wine regions. There is also a bit of it planted over in WA. The variety offers cassis, red fruits, black fruits, superb intensity and a degree of smokiness. This might be the first time a trophy winner at the Adelaide Wine Show has contained Fer, which offers a nice opportunity for nerdy contemplation. More importantly, the wine is beautiful. Looking beyond the accolades garnered at the Adelaide Show, these wines have also accrued an additional 10 gold medals, a trophy, a runner up in Halliday’s annual Cabernet competition and more. These wines are uniformly exceptional.

    Frankland River, WA
Gold-Royal Adelaide Wine Show, 4 x Gold Medal

As good as Tempranillo gets. This is rich and spiced, with blackberries, juicy cherries and a savoury finish. The palate is gorgeously velvety and comforting with just the right amount of acid and tannins to give this length and persistence.

    Margaret River, WA
Gold, top gold and 2 trophies - Royal Adelaide Wine Show, Best Shiraz 2022 and younger, Best Shiraz in Show, 1 Gold elsewhere

A supremely confident and self-assured wine, with exceptionally bright yet intense red and blue fruits, and spice. Texture is wonderful, the acid tannins balance perfect and the finish a beautiful amalgam of fine fruit tannins and cedary, chewy oak tannins which add complexity. An amazing wine comprising 86% Shiraz and 14% Fer. Fer is an ancient varietal, likely of Basque country origin which is widely planted in Southwest France, and generally makes up 100% of reds coming out of the Marcilliac region. It is one of the grandparents of the superb Carmenere varietal and is prized for its impenetrable black coloring and density of fruit. Flavours sit in the blackberry, cherry and black tea spectrums, and the variety also typically offers a pleasing smokiness.

Delicate and complex and with a long life ahead of it, the 22 Redbrook Chard offers a tight citrus line underpinned by stonefruits, creamy lees and a hint of reductive smokiness and funk. Intense, fresh yet rich and with a beautiful texture.

Old vine fruit here is fermented and then aged in high quality French oak. There is a floral, red fruited nose, spice, dark fruits and chocolate before a fine tannin finish showing both fruit tannins and cedar. Will be delicious over the next 10 years.

Gold - Royal Adelaide Wine Show

Perfumed, with tropical and citrus notes, bath powder, lime, apricots and more. The palate is similar and offers a mid palate creaminess and a hint of oyster shell. One of the best Aussie examples of this 3 way Rhone varietal blend we've come across.

    Geographe, WA
Gold Medal – Royal Adelaide Wine Show, Gold Medal, Top Gold, Trophy

Make no mistake, this is a full-bodied blend of Sauv Blanc and Sem which has seen some oak maturation. A complex amalgam of lime zest and grapefruit with gentle nuances of French oak. Textural and long, this is citrus pithy and lime zesty with an overlay of grilled nuts.

    Coonawarra, SA
Gold Medal-Royal Adelaide Wine Show, 96pts James Halliday, Runner up Halliday Cabernet Challenge, 96pts Limestone Coast Wine Show

A magical Coonawarra Cabernet from the exceptional 2021 vintage. Milk and dark chocolate, tobacco, black cherry, mint, nutmeg, cinnamon. oregano and a hint of bay leaf. Power, elegance, structure, offset by a generous texture, the fruit and non-fruit complexities all cascading to a finely woven tannin finish. Effortlessly awesome.

    Adelaide Hills, SA
    Gold Royal Adelaide Wine Show

Lime and lime zest with snow pea tendrils and grapefruit. A delightful texture and just the perfect amount of acidity to allow the fruit to make its powerful point without taking over the show. A delightful Savvy which should improve for a few years yet.

    McLaren Vale, SA
Gold Medal Royal Adelaide Wine Show, Gold Medal, Top Gold Trophy
A stunning Aussie Touriga here, sourced from Heirloom finest vineyard. Has picked up a gold at the Adelaide Show, to go with its Trophy from Sydney. Lots of whole bunch here, to emphasise fragrance and vivacity of fruit and a relatively short 7 month maturation in 20% new French oak. Mulberry, fennel, cinnamon, liquorice, herbs and more all on the go here in what is a big brooding wine that somehow also manages to be fresh and vibrant.
    McLaren Vale, SA
Gold Medal Royal Adelaide Wine Show, 94pts Wine Front

Power, fragrance and balance. This wine manages to offer all three, with fresh red and blue fruits, floral aromatics and a palate that's both crunchy and smooth, and laden with mulberry, cherries, marzipan, vanilla, cured meats and white pepper. A stunner!

    Barossa Valley, SA
Gold - Royal Adelaide Wine Show, 94pts Kim Brebach, 92pts Qwinereviews.com, 2 x Gold Medal

The first GSM released by Purple Hands with previous editions having led with Mataro. From our perspective, also the best Grenache blend they have released to date and one of their very best wines overall. Fantastic fragrance here, along with spice, redcurrant, plum, chocolate, cedar and more. Has a tensile aspect which gives this life and lift in a fashion which very few wines can achieve. Exceptional length and a total joy to drink.
