12 Cracking Quaffers PLUS 2 Corker Keepers
Here’s a dozen for every day slurping and a couple of absolute pearlers for a special occasion. The Wits End is an aromatic Shiraz with bright red and blue fruits, spice and lip-smacking acidity. This is dangerously easy to drink and finishes with enough tannins to bring it into balance and give the wine length. The Johnston bustles in with blue and black fruits, mocha, spice, French oak and plenty of chalky tannins to finish. The Allegiance Reserve Barossa Shiraz offers aromas of violets and blue and black fruits. The palate is rich, big and smooth, with pepper, plum, cranberry, chocolate, vanilla and cedar finishing with plush, silken tannins. This is one of those perfectly balanced wines which is an absolute joy to drink now but will improve over the decades like a great friendship. Dandelion’s Firehawk Farm is produced from their finest McLaren Vale vineyard. There is mammoth concentration and perfect integration of fruit, oak and acid. With air, this morphs into an absolute stunner. Sweet fruit, searing acid, savoury complexities, chocolate, graphite and blue fruits are all on show along with earthiness, cedar and plenty of tannin. This might just be the McLaren Vale’s best Shiraz.
